Cornell Weaves Seeds into Everyday Devices

Researchers from Cornell University's College of Human Ecology have developed a new design and fabrication process that integrates living plants into everyday objects. The method weaves seeds into a hydrogel material used for devices such as hairbands, wristbands, hats, and sandals. When these items are cared for properly, the embedded seeds have the potential to grow into sprouts.

Associate Professor Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao, who specializes in human-centered design, explained that the project explores the longstanding relationship between humans and plants. She noted that throughout history, plants have been used as food and transformed into fabric. This new approach aims to develop a more mutual, collaborative interaction between people and the natural environment, potentially contributing to more sustainable practices in the future.
