Jacksonville Officer Shoots Armed Suspect in Incident
On August 13, 2025, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Officer C. Bumgarner shot a 30‐year‐old Black man on East 25th Street near Buckman Street in Jacksonville’s Longbranch area. Officers responded at around 7 a.m. to a call reporting a man with mental health concerns who had attempted to start a fire at a home on East 16th Street and was armed with a knife.
After learning the suspect’s identity and description, a K9 officer located him and called his name. The suspect did not stop and began running away while still holding the knife. The officer exited his vehicle with a taser. When the suspect threatened the officer by pushing the knife out twice, the officer dropped the taser, drew his pistol, and shot the suspect.
Additional officers quickly arrived at the scene, secured the knife from the suspect, and provided emergency medical aid. The suspect did not survive. Next of kin notification has not yet been made.
Sheriff T.K. Waters and Chief Alan Parker reported that this is the 13th officer-involved shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The officer involved was not injured. The State Attorney’s Office is on the scene completing its investigation. Once it is concluded, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will start its own inquiry.
